This is not a Writing Manua

by Sean F.

This is not a Writing Manual is a nonfiction book written by Kerri Majors. This is the only book Majors has published, but she also has also wrote some short stories which include Trip to Saigon, a short story about an art copier in Vietnam. This is not a Writing Manual is a memoir of Majors writing life, beginning all the way back in middle school. Inside the book are stories of the author about writing in real life. This book is not a manual, but rather a collection of occurrences that happened to the author, which give the reader insight on the real world of writing. From developing a writer's voice, to landing a job, to dealing with rejection, Kerri Major tells all in this book about the realities of the writing world. The book then explains time management for the aspiring writer, and how guilty pleasure such as soap operas, and eavesdropping can actually improve your writing skills. The book then describes how to get your literature reviewed by a writing buddy or support writing group. Learn about Majors rollercoaster ride of a story on how she got a agent and eventually got published.

This book is for the young adult writer. I wish I read this book sooner than I already have because it gives you tips and advice that truly do increase your writing capability. Kerri Majors, the author, although now a big time writer, shows in the book that she is just like you or me writing a high school paper and makes herself easy to relate to. This deviates from the traditional writing manual which I really like because it gives a more personal approach on writing etiquette.

If you are a young reader or an aspiring writer of any sort you should seek this book out to read.  This is not a Writing Manual is a very original and fun take on a traditional writing manual and is a very interesting and fun read, while still being packed with knowledge for the average and not so average writer. If you wish to seek out this book it can be found at your local bookstore in the nonfiction section under writing.
