The Little Yellow Writing Book

By Sarah K.

The Little English Handbook by Edward Corbett and Sheryl Finkle is the perfect book if you want to enhance your writing. From formatting, to choosing what words to use, to research, it tells you everything you need to know to write anything from a manuscript to a résumé. The book is split into eight parts, formatting a manuscript, clear effective paragraphs, grammatical sentences, stylistic choices, punctuation and mechanics, research writing and documentation, forms for letters, and résumés. Each section goes into depth explaining the mechanics of it's subject and the best way it can be used in writing.

This book was one of the most helpful writing books, definitely in the top two out of the two I've read. It does an impressive job of explaining certain parts of writing that I didn't understand before, like oxford commas. It gives lots of sample sentences to show how components are used, which was useful. It would give an original sentence, which usually had something wrong with it, or just wasn't the best it could be, and then would show a revised sentence. Reading this book shows you lots of ways to fix up your own writing just by reading through sentence to sentence and looking for all the things this book covered in it's grammar, punctuation, and word choice sections. This book also does a great job teaching you how to write things I never even thought about before, like professional letters.
I would recommend this book to anyone who writes, because no matter what it is you're writing this book can make it better. Reading this book will also make you a better writer in the future because you will remember the things to do or not do. You'll remember what works and what doesn't. You can find this book in a book store or online.
