Angelica N's last book review

By Angelica N.

This book is about a girl who is anorexic, everyone believes that she is happy and full of life, but she actually is struggling with self love and a eating disorder. She eats less and self harms, she pretends like everything's okay and that she is very happy, but when no one's around, she breaks down, self harms and makes herself throw up just to "lose weight". This book changed my perspective on mental illness disorders, it's so sad i read it and it basically affected me. I felt so bad i even skipped a meal or two, not because of my body weight, because i felt bad that she did it daily, just to feel good, and stronger.

Stayed up til 1:30 am just to finish this

This review should have had a clever title

By: Isaiah B.
K is for killer, a book written by Sue Grafton has a mysterious theme to it. It is based off the death of a girl and it can get really scary. This book gives you  a "What's going to happen next" thought in your mind while reading it. It is so interesting because of the spook factor within the novel. K is for Killer is one of Sue Grafton's alphabet series books with twenty-four books in the entire series.

What A Bird Trick

I Have no Idea What this Means but its Deep Photojournislim

By Stacey L.

This thick book of wonders is Dan Eldon's journals bound together, copied and re-ordered as a life and craft book . This book was created by his loving sister in honor of  his work .  Eldon had a very intimate artistic connection with his journals where they simply weren't handwritten summaries of his everyday events , they were artistic collages that more spoke his words for him. He showed parts of himself such as great pride in African tribal culture and having the opportunity to know such people. He also photographs and shows with his art the evils of discrimination, racism, homicide and war in Africa

This review lacks a clever title ... the beginning of a pattern, mayhaps?

By Alex H.

Damocles is a series of short stories set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. It's about the Space Marines of several different chapters, including the White Scars, Raven Guard, Dark Hunters, Ultramarines, and Jade Dragons fighting alongside each other as they battle against the Tau Empire for control of the star system. The stories are good because they all flow together really well, especially the first and last ones, which use the same White Scars characters but at the start and either the middle or end of the deployment of Astartes, for it's not mentioned.

This review lacks a clever title

By Alex H.

Ian Douglas' book Semper Mars, the first book in The Heritage Trilogy was done perhaps as well, if not better than book one of Star Carrier: Earth Strike even though Semper Mars was written before. Semper Mars has no obvious flaws, but one of the interesting things about it is the way in which it fluidly changes from one group of people to another at just the right time to keep it interesting. He does this by having what seems like a military record of everything, which makes the story seem like it was actually happening.

This review lacks a clever title

By Alex H

Ian Douglas' book Star Carrier: Earth Strike was done real well, except for one major thing. There was a lot of excess detail. The first time my dad picked this up for me from the library, I could barely get through the first few chapters before I put the book down. I read a lot. It's one of my top things to do. But even though I was out of new things to read, I returned this book. The second time my dad got it, which was months later, I read through it again fully. I still saw the excessive amount of detail, but I was able to get past it and finish it, as well as read the sequels. For example, early on in the book is a space battle between the Confederacy and the Tursch. At one point, one of the pilots fires AMSOs (Anti Missile Shield Ordnance) at the Tursch. Douglas goes on to talk about AMSOs for several pages, discussing what they are while they're hardly used in the beginning. Towards the end of the book, AMSOs are used again, and Ian goes over them again. He spends even more time talking about what the AMSOs are, almost as if the book was written by two people who weren't working together.

Nankings Suffering

The story is told from 3 different perspectives. The perspectives are from the Japanese soldiers who did it, the Americans and Europeans who made it safe for Chinese citizens and saved lives and the Chinese citizens who experienced what the Japanese had done to them.

How to Write Poetry for the Angsty 7th Grader Going Through an Emo Phase

by Ala Y
Immersed in Verse is subtitled as "An Informative, Slightly Irreverent & Totally Tremendous Guide to Living the Poet's Life." This book is about how to express oneself through, write, and revise poetry. There's many descriptions on different types of poems. It also includes different elements which can be used to strengthen one's poetry.
The book is written with an "inviting" tone of voice for the ambitious reader. The exemplary poems are interesting selections and great for discovering poets. The heavy illustration sometimes distracts from the message of the writing, which sucks. I did find some helpful tips like the writing habits advised in the first 20 pages of the book. The wording, although the book itself tells aspiring poets to build their vocabulary, is super basic. The book itself lacks in complexity. This is neither a good or bad thing, simply an observation.
Overall, I'm not going out of my way to purchase this book for reference later on (I found it in the media center at NHSS), but I might keep some notes from it in my writing journal for future reference. If you're new to poetry, check it out. If you've been exposed to poetry for a while, I'd look in another direction for a more intuitive guide.

Good Storytelling (Is Not an Exact Science)

By Mackenzi V.

Save the Cat!: The Last Book on Screenwriting You'll Ever Need by the late Blake Snyder is a clever breakdown of story structure from a "show biz veteran" himself. While the book is good in that it gets the reader thinking about film in terms of structure, this veteran status at times gives Snyder a condescending rather than helpful voice. Despite this, the advice seems to be sound. Save the Cat! is a book for those inexperienced writers who aren't quite sure where to start (and maybe don't mind being talked down to).

Running Away for the Kite Reasons

By Anthony M.

Khaled Hosseini's first novel, The Kite Runner, is an interesting novel about the search for redemption and the power of familial bonds. The story follows Amir, a young Afghan boy who struggles with finding his identity and fit within the world. Set mainly in Afghanistan, Hosseini tells the story of Amir both in his youth and his adult life. Amir makes a decision to ignore a horrendous crime and is haunted by it for the rest of his life. He commits his own crimes and eventually leaves his home for America, where he lives in endless guilt, until he ultimately returns to Afghanistan. The title of the novel is inspired by the dueling completion many young Afghans take place in where the two competitors fly kites and try to cut the other's down. The winner of each match receives the loser's kite and then certain boys, called kite runners, chase down the trophy.

Khaled Hosseini gives the world an insider look at Afghan culture through this thrilling novel. The story is not necessarily action-packed, but Hosseini utilizes the perfect amount of suspense and keeps the readers actively engaged throughout. Hosseini expertly paces this story through different flashbacks and narrative structures so that there is rarely a dull moment. The story is so fascinating that the length of the text and any minor flaws can be easily overlooked. This critically-acclaimed novel does feature some themes and scenes, however, that does not make it appropriate for all ages. Even as a young adult, some of the events in this novel were uncomfortable to experience. But, Hosseini purposefully crossed the line. If he did not, the world would not obtain an authentic view of the culture and lifestyles that he himself was exposed to as a child. It is necessary to create discomfort because too many times the world ignores the things they do not like or understand. Hosseini makes it very clear what happens and what the atmosphere is like in Afghanistan, which ultimately opens the eyes of many readers, including my own.
Often times people shy away from stories about the Middle East and neglect the thriving cultures that exist there simply because they do not understand and do not care to change. This must-read novel will hopefully cure the ignorance of some of those people and expose the them to something new. This book is incredibly interesting, however, it is not for the young or faint of heart. Anyone old enough for college should certainly consider this timeless masterpiece.

Read This Book and You Might Actually Write A Novel

By Ashley J

This Year You Write Your Novel by Walter Mosley had great insight into the world of writing. A lot of which, actually, I learned in Creative writing. Although, I think, this had better descriptions as to what things like third and first person narration was, the concepts were mostly the same as what I was taught. A few things I was nodding my head to in agreement. Things like how procrastination is a writer's worst enemy. I completely agree with that, my writers block and avoidance of the story usually means it takes me a month to write a three paged chapter that isn't really all that great.

Alternate history is often considered a boring genre, with limited appeal to many people due to the historical knowledge needed to fully understand it, yet Robert Harris made the genre mainstream with his 1992 novel The Fatherland.

Ever love

By Christopher I.

Alyson noel is the author of Evermore.  My cousin told me about the big and i got hooked on it from the start. I started reading the book on a Friday and I finished it on Sunday if i had to be completely honest with you i kinda just listened to it before i went to sleep but it made me stay up all night. This was a very odd thing for me to do. Since i am a very social and hyper person who can't really focus on just one thing.  Usually on the weekend I hang out with my friends Lupe, Leon and miguel  I was with them for parts of my day but when being with them my body was physically there but not mentally and usually this is normal because we all do get like this but usually with the same stuff.  I was wondering off about this book. Ever is the main character in the book.  The thing that hooked me was big bang in the beginning. Ever's family died in a car accident beside her. After this she was really different she was able to see others auras and can hear people's thoughts and as well as see her dead sister. Obviously it had a dramatic effect on her. She has to live with this everyday so when she starts her new school she lays low instead of being the popular girl she used to being. Through this all her sister is staying with her instead of crossing over to the "light".

Just Another Love Story

By: Christopher I.

John Greene, whose one amazing author of one of the top selling books, The Fault In Our Stars, this isn't your average love story. This book has so many twist and turns and it's not one of those cliche books where you just see everything coming.

Paper Thin Love

By christopher I.

Paper towns was written by John Green. I give this book probably a 7.5 out of 10. In the book the main Character Quentin Jacobsen goes on adventure looking for his missing neighbor who just so happened to be what he thought the love of his life. In the book Jacobsen and his friends find clues Margo has left for Quentin and go on a hunt for her. Margo is the most popular girl at school and she's spontaneous so it doesn't seem like a big deal to others that she was missing but I questioned a lot why no one made a huge deal about it. I really liked seeing character conquer their fears and getting out of their comfort zones.

Howl and other poems by Allen Ginsberg is a pocket poetry series centered around the theme of societal decay and revolution. Allen Ginsberg is a poet and firm believer in a socialist system. The poems hold a mirror to a society that is greed driven and money hungry.

A young man discovers Vonnegut

By Justin K.

Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five is a compelling science fiction novel with anti war undertones. The novel is centered around the recollections of an elderly soldier. What begins as a cautionary war story depicting the graphic firebombing of Dresden quickly becomes a Sci-Fi tale of alien abduction and interdimensional travel.

Structuring The Chaos That Is Writing

By Patrick M

Syd Field's instructional guide Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting goes through anything and everything you need to know about how to write a screenplay. The book presents screenwriting as a step-by-step process on how to turn an idea into a finished script. Jumping all the way from basic plot and character structure to what to do after the screenplay is finished it really does cover it all. As well as being instructional, the book also features hundreds of examples from successful films both modern and classic.

Mysterious lover? Friend or both?

By Sydney K.

My book is called Along For The Ride. Sarah Dessen is one of my favorite authors because the flow of her writing. Her writing is similar to a music key, there are parts of the book where major scenes tie the whole thing together.  The climax of the story is when Auden West meets a boy named Eli,a fellow insomniac who Auden spends a lot of time with.  Auden learns a lot from Eli  and gains new experiences. Is Auden actually along for the ride or will the ride be bumpy for her?

A twisted love story

By Sydney K.

John Green, the author of Looking for Alaska which won him a New york times bestselling award.  The main character is Hazel Grace Lancaster , a cancer patient that is diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer and problems with her lungs. Hazel goes to a support group where she meets Augustus Waters. Augustus Waters is a cute boy who also is dealing with life with cancer under his shadow. Bone cancer is what Augustus has which makes him weaker than others. This cancer is called Osteosarcoma.

Who are you living for?

By Sydney K.

Matched by Ally Condie, this is the first book I've read from this author. It's a dystopian novel with a so called perfect society. The society makes all the rules. The society has even found cures and a way to get rid of cancer and anything to make a perfect world. The society monitors everything. Throughout the book, Cassia does realize the society isn't perfect. She learns the past and learns how to write her name. Writing is a thing of the past and isn't taught by the society. Cassia is the main character of the book.

My Sisters Keeper Book Review

                                            My Sisters Keeper

My sister's keeper is a book about a families struggle when one child has cancer and another child is born solely to harvest parts to save the cancer child's life. A legal battle ensues between a mother and a daughter but the story goes beyond and shows how each member of the family is affected and how a case like this even touches the lives of the attorney's as well.

The Help Book Review

                                                     The Help

The help takes place in Mississippi in the 1960's. In 1960 there were few places that were as racist as the state as Mississippi. The help is about a young female writer who wants to be taken seriously as a novelist and doesn't like the way black maids are treated by their employers. The book covers both the serious nature of civil rights with humor and laugh out loud moments. It's a long book but it will keep you turning the pages and thoroughly entertained.

Diary of Anne Frank

By: Geena G.
The Diary of Anne Frank is a heartbreaking account of a young girl's life while in hiding during the second World War. The diary was written by Anne Frank herself, a vivacious Jewish teenager in 1942 who was awoken one morning and dragged into an abandoned attic of a warehouse where she would spend the next two years of her life pretending to not exist. The Frank family, Otto, Edith, Margot, and Anne lived in the attic with another Jewish family, Peter, Hermann, and Auguste van Pels, in the "secret annex" for two years before getting discovered and arrested.

Perks of Reading a Good Book

By : Geena G.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky is an emotional and moving novel about a shy young boy when faced with the harsh reality of his teenage life. The realistic-fiction novel follows a socially-awkward and depressed, yet completely brilliant Charlie, as he navigates his way through his freshman year. He begins his high school career as a loner with no friends, desperately trying to remain below the radar and escape from that school as fast as possible. That all changes when he meets Sam and Patrick, two insane half-siblings who show him that maybe ducking under the radar isn't the best way to live.
