This hath not a title

By Jake M.

Walter Dean Myers book on writing was something interesting and unexpected for me. The book was called "just write here's how". The book was meant to teach the younger minds of this generation about how to write and fix your problems when it comes to writing stories or basically anything for that matter. The book helps people come up with ideas or fix ideas in their stories. This story is not just for kids, it is for anyone who wants to further their writing skills and creative ideas.

A reader learns to read (but not title a book review)

By Prathyush K.

The Body of Christopher Creed is the sort of book I'd normally never
pick up out of pure curiousity. Normally, I'd pick up a good high
fantasy or sword and sorcery novel, but a psychological thriller that
deals with the effects of bullying? Not exactly my cup of tea.
However, I have to say, I am certainly glad that I read this book.

This does not have a title

By Sam C.

Over the past month or so, I've had the pleasure of reading a Kurt Vonnegut classic, Player Piano. The characters weren't meant to jump off the page, but rather adapt to the dilemmas they faced over the course of a long period of time. My favorite character was obviously Paul Proteus because of how he handled his situation given the circumstances, but the most underrated has to be Reverend James J. Lasher simply because of how subtle his importance is to the story. Overall, the few characters in the story manage to make the story interesting without detracting from its edge. I also admire the title of the story, "Player Piano". It is a highly appropriate metaphor for how things once done by human are now being done by machines.

The Situation and the Story

By Sonia Gauvin

This book is about teaching writers who are already experienced with narrative writing, how to expand their skill. One line that really stand out to me when describing this book is "How do you turn the boring truth of your life into a story worth telling?" That quote is the first line on the back of the book. This book is about showing the audience a narrative story and not just telling it because this skill is what defines an amateur writer and an experienced writer. The author, Vivian Gornick doesn't try to cover a lot of ground superficially, but lays out one main idea and goes into it in depth by using a wide variety of examples to illustrate her ideas.  You can tell that this writing tool is based on Vivian's  many years of teaching creative writing because it focuses on ways of making narratives interesting and not about being obsessed with yourself.

ON MY LIFE--- I MEAN… ON WRITING

By Megan V.

Just Write: Here's How by Walter Dean Myers is a rather interesting book about writing. While it has it's high points and very informative lessons, the majority of the book spends time talking about Myers' personal life along with his experiences with a teenage boy named Ross with whom he collaborated on a book. At times this novel took on more of a biography-esque nature, discussing in detail aspects of the writer's teenage years, when he was growing up in the city with a foster family, instead of his writing process. While the connection is made between his upbringing and how this has influenced his writing style, it is almost too much. We learn less about how he writes and more about why he writes what he does. Parts of the book even discuss things he's written, but not through the eyes of his process and instead what the books are about and how they relate to him. This makes parts of the book come off as more of a self promotion and less as an informative example of writing craft.

From Carrie to Revival and Everywhere in Between

By: Madison C.

Stephen King is no Shakespeare, and he'll be the first to tell you that. But he is the wealthiest sonuvabitch ever to make a living from the written word, and though those who make their living don't like to admit it, that counts. From word one of Carrie thirty years ago to the upcoming Dreamcatcher, King has scared so many bejeezuses out of so many of us that we cannot ignore his impact on our culture or on his profession. Moby-Dick and The Red Badge of Courage may be what we're supposed to read, but Salem's Lot and Misery are what we do read, and that counts too.

You is kind, You is smart, You is important

By: Madison C.

Lush, original, and poignant, Kathryn Stockett has written a wondrous novel set in the deep south told through the authentic voices of Aibileen, Minnie, and Skeeter, three unforgettable women whose lives and points of view intersect vividly against a landscape of hopeful change in America. While reading The Help you will be swept away as they work, play, and love during a time when possibilities for women were few but their dreams of the future were limitless.

Writing to the Bone

By: Veronica B.
Natalie Goldberg is a teacher from New Mexico and that's where a lot of her inspiration comes from. She wrote her first book, Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within, in 1986 and has written nine since then. Most of her books revolve around teaching others how to do things, such as writing or painting, while connecting it to spirituality.  She uses insightful, witty, and practical advice to encourage people to dig within and find the right words to use. Writing Down the Bones is a book that is best read in segments, rather than just sitting down and forcing yourself through the whole thing.

The Breath of Writing

By Alyssa G.

In "Writing Begins with the Breath", Laraine Herring shows us how to transfer our emotions from our body's onto paper.  Her goal by writing this story was to teach us that writing should connect our emotions and full being to our works instead of having it just be an intellectual exercise.  This book opened up a creative outlet to the writing world and also teaches the reader about the basics everyone needs to know to be a writer.

Breakfast Served NEVER

By Rebecca H.
In my sixteen years, I had read and loved many books. Never once had I absolutely despised a novel so much. I had recently read a self-published novel titled Stones to Abbigale. Truthfully, it could have been better, but the plot line was followed with ease. Breakfast Served Anytime, however, was nearly impossible to read.

The Proper Way To Write

By the Anonymous Author
The Book On Writing by Paula LaRocque is explained by the title. It teaches you how to write to the best of your ability. It teaches you most of the stuff that Mr.Greene teaches in our class. It also has many topics that Mr.Greene never fully went over, such as getting straight to the point,  cutting prepositions, using active voice, and more. The genre of the book is self help, and it is a good one at that. It immediately gets to the point, and starts teaching you from the get go.

Generic Title to Pique your Interest

                         By Matt C
For my final book review I decided to pick up one of the most popular books about writing. I decided to read "On Writing Well" by William Zinsser. This book focuses on teaching the art of writing nonfiction. William Zinsser is a fantastic writer who is often used as a reference by many other writers. His out of the ordinary approach to writing, and his unique technique is what makes this book so useful for striving writers. In this book he goes over the basics of the writing craft as a whole, as well as specific tools you can use while writing nonfiction.

The Fault In Our Stars
By Mavis D.

The Fault In Our Stars is not like every teen romance novel. The book also includes the struggle of a girl and a boy with cancer and everything they've had to go through. This book basically tells teenagers that no matter how much you may go through, that doesn't stop you from living your life. The story is about a girl named Hazel who has cancer that spread to her lungs. She wears a breathing tube and has to go to support groups. While in the support group she meets a man named Augustus Waters

Second Book Review

By The Anonymous Stranger

Of Mice and Men is about two field workers in California during the Great Depression. There's George Milton and Lennie Small, Lennie also has a mental illness. They both had a dream of living on their own land. In Lennie's part of the dream he wants to touch soft rabbits on the farm, he loves touching things that are soft. Lennie loves it when George tells the story about the farm. The boss's son, Curley, hates large men which made Lennie a target. Curley's wife tries to flirt with all the workers because she's lonely.

Curley started a fight with Lennie, where Lennie ended up crushing and breaking his hand. In the story, Lenne played with the puppy in the barn. While stroking the puppy, Lennie ended up killing it by being too rough. After Lennie killed the puppy, Curley's wife came into the barn talking about Lonely she was and her dreams of being a movie star. After finding out that he likes to pet soft things, she offered to let him stroke her hair. He became rough and she started yell and he panicked then snapped her neck. After all of that happened, Curley was looking around to have him lynched.
George took Lennie out next to a lake, he started telling the story about the farm then shot Lennie in the back of the head.
The story was really emotional at some points and had a lot of foreshadowing. I'm not really into old stories, but this one kind of interested me. I recommend this book to people who are into historical fiction and drama. This one definitely has a lot of twist.

This book was probably a little young for you

stay gold ponyboy

By Someone Who Will Not Get Credit
The outsiders is a novel written by S.E Hinton. This novel was a very well written novel about a couple groups of boys. The poorer and more broken part of the towns group were called the greasers. On the other side of town where the richer more fancy part of town there's a group called the soches and these two groups are like rivals they completely hate each other. While reading this book you will notice that this book is a very powerful book. The main character pony boy lives a life without parents and only has his two older brothers and ponyboy really looks up to them and wants to be like them. Another member of the greasers is johnyboy and he also lives in a bad home. Johnny Boys lives with his dad and his dad is a drunk and beats on johny like has if he is a rag doll. These two characters are very important in this book so if you read it look at their lives and compare them with yours it could change your look on your life.

Book Review #3- House of Dolls
By Sonia G.

This novella is written by Ka-tzenik. Joy Divisions were special camps within bigger camps that Nazi officers would send young, Jewish women and live there solely to sexually pleasure Nazi soldiers. This book is no longer in print due to the unpopularity of the graphic content. It is unknown if the story is fiction that's based on a diary kept by a young Jewish girl who was captured in Poland when she was fourteen years old and forced into sexual slavery in a Nazi labor camp or if it's nonfiction about Ka-tznik's sister. The book is specifically about a brothel in Auschwitz. The post-punk band, Joy Division got their name from these brothels and this book.
