Does want cloud judgment?

By James M.
The story Needful Things by Stephen King is a twisted, horrific, and suspenseful tale about a shop in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine. The store is owned by a man named Leland Gaunt, gaunt is basically a demon in the disguise of innocent old man. The store has exactly what any customer needs, for example the first customer, a young boy named Brian Rusk enters the store and purchases a high value baseball card for a low price. However after any purchase the customer is asked to perform a small prank, these pranks then eventually become murders and other vicious crimes. Leland exploits the feuds between citizens to make them commit the crimes. The story ends with a chillingly similar store opening up in Junction City, Iowa.

Equality or Injustice

By Partha P.

Anthem was an interesting and thought-provoking book. Ayn Rand delivered another dystopian society book that makes us question where our own society is heading. Are we rumbling towards a communist society with 'equality'? Or are we still on the path of democracy? Anthem makes us take these issues into light. It starts of with our awkward main character equality 7-2521, who wants to be a scholar badly. He was a smart kid and was always reprimanded for it.

Jane Austen is one of the most widely read writers in English literature. She wrote novels like Sense and Sensibility and Emma which were part of the transition to 19th century realism. Most of her stories talk about the dependence of women on marriage to secure social standing and economic security. Her most famous book is Pride and Prejudice. Even though the story was set in the 19th century, it’s still popular and continues to be near the top of “most loved books” lists.

Brought up in a much older time, Pat Frank is one of my favorite authors to read. He talks about situations that could actually come about, and uses realistic detail to keep you interested. His novel, Alas Babylon, depicts a post-atomic war theme talking about the events of an atomic war between the United States and the Soviet Union. The protagonist, Randy Bragg, is the leader of what’s left of his town after a nuclear war and needs to figure out what to do.

Out of my mind is a very interesting book in so many ways and I suggest most teens to read this book.  Melody is a 11 year old girl who was told by a doctor that she has cerebral palsy BUT what doctors do not understand is that Melody is a very intelligent girl.  She has a phenomenal memory, but is unable to walk or hold a fork all she can do is put move both thumbs.

Keep Your Fingers Crossed

By Emily G.

The book I'm reading is called Criss Cross by Lynne Rae Perkins. This book is about a girl who lives in a very small town. In the beginning of the book there is a girl who is always wishing for the better. She always thinks that something better can happen. She kept wishing for something to happen. Not much happens in this book but it is really interesting to read. Debbie is always borrowing stuff from her sister Chrisanne. When Chrisanne isn't home Debbie borrows her sister’s stuff like clothes, jewelry and stuff. This book is very good to read. I recommend it to teenagers. This book makes it realistic for us teenagers; it makes us see that the grass is really greener on the other side. This book has made me realize that people have life harder and is always wishing for better things.

Your Not so Average Life

By Makayla F.

From multiple ways of broadcasting your life in a nonchalant way is the form of writing author Ellen Hopkins uses. From at least ten books portraying the not so average life of hers the book Fallout is by far my favorite. The author brings together very descriptive and flamboyant images to mind. The book is about 3 different teenagers all facing the same problem. Their mother had abandoned them for the monster. When I talk about the monster I don't just mean fictional character that hide under your bed, I mean the cold hard drugs that have the name Crack Cocaine, or Crystal Meth. Kristina Georgia Snow was the excuse of a mother to her kids Hunter Seth Haskins, Autumn Rose Shepherd, and Summer Lily Kenwood.

Life of Pi is a Canadian fantasy novel about a kid named Pi Patel from Pondicherry, who gets stranded on a lifeboat for 227 days with a Bengal tiger. The story starts off telling about Pi as a child, how he grew up and about his affiliation with the zoo and religion. His family then makes the rash decision to sell the zoo and immigrate to Canada, which is when the boat sinks and only Pi and a few friends make it out alive.  The story is being retold by Pi, many years later being told to a researcher.

Famous for his views on politics and his awareness of social injustice, George Orwell is the best when it comes to writing stories with political meaning. Animal Farm is a cute childrens book by first glance, but when looking for a deeper meaning, there is a heavy political influence throughout the entire book. It is the story of a group of animals on a farm who feel opressed by their farmer and decide to revolt against him and take over the farm and run it themselves.
The Manor farm is your typical and ordinary farm out in England.

Buzz Aldrin is considered by many as an American hero.  Being the second man ever to walk on the moon is quite an accomplishment, but a lot of people have forgotten that Aldrin has been extremely influential in America’s journey farther into the Cosmos.  In his book, Mission to Mars, Aldrin gives the reader a look at the current efforts being made by NASA and private space companies to reach farther into the Universe.

'The Last Olympian' gets a Gold Medal

By Nelson K.
"The Last Olympian" is a great fiction book written by Rick Riordan. Rick Riordan is a great writer who has written ‘the Olympians’ series. Kronos’s army is growing stronger and stronger as he recruits new members. As the Olympians struggle to fight the rampaging monster Typhon, Kronos begins his advance to New York City where mount Olympus stands virtually unguarded. One Decision Will Shape Your Life Forever.

By Brianna D.

The book that I read for this month was Insurgent by Veronica Roth.  It is the sequel to the highly praised book Divergent and continues to be part of the dystopian genre . Insurgent picks up right where Divergent ended. The Dauntless faction is destroyed. The society is at war with the Erudite and the Dauntless traitors against all others remaining. Divergence is valuable because of their unique ability to withhold simulations. During this novel, Tris will have to embrace her divergence to help her friends and save the people of the factions. Tris and Tobias now running from Jeannie have to make unlikely allies and make deals with people who will do the unthinkable.

Traumatized by The Crazed Man, Splintering

By Kaila T.

Recently I have read the book Splintering by Eireann Corrigan. This book is a mystery/fiction book that focuses how a break in by a crazed man affects one family. Throughout the book it bounces back between drugs, fear, faith, and coping. As the book starts off it's extremely confusing. I found myself often wondering what was going on and who exactly was talking, this was a turn off and almost made me out the book down. BUT, when I looked up who the characters were I got a better idea of what was going on and found myself able to follow along. After I had looked up and read the background I found myself getting more into what was going on. I know I was going to put the book down and find a new one but I am ultimately glad I did not do so. By the middle of the book I found myself unable to put it down and interested in what was going to happen next. Reading this book with the poem format may be strange for some but I definitely enjoyed how it was written, and how the writing was broken down.

Horribly Entertaining

By Ben M.

I think part of what makes "Carrie" by Stephen King so amazing is that even though it is a horror book, it can relate to so many people. Sadly Carrie is not loved by her Mom or anyone really. Her mother is crazy. The kids at school are horribly mean. She has no friends and no life. She is isolated and miserable. She is an outcast who can see that people have loving families, homes and friends but is trapped in her awful life.

"A Life of Jesus", by Edgar Goodspeed, is the most truthful, and detailed factual testament to the entire remarkable life of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ. Goodspeed's incredible resources and quotes from the Old Testament have shattered the myth of the "dark years" of Jesus' boyhood adolescence, and takes the reader back to the beginning of time as we know it, in a way that peaked the interest of even the most destined athiest. From the immaculate birth of Christ, to the finalizing serman on the mount and eventual crucifiction, the author uses the Holy Gospel, some generalization, and the preachings of the tweleve apostles Peter, James, John, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, James, Mathew, Simon, Thaddaeus, and Judas to document an accurate biography of the most well-known man who has ever walked on God's green Earth.

Lia and Cassie vowed to be the skinniest girls in school. But their competition soon turned into a struggle with something bigger. The novel Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson, author of the bestseller Speak, follows the life of Lia, a girl suffering with anorexia nervosa. Lia’s best friend Cassie also suffers from the illness as well as bulimia. When Lia learns of Cassie’s death she is taken back. But when she later discovers that Cassie had called her 33 times that night, she is haunted by her friend’s spirit and her own ghosts within.

Hungry for More

by Amanda M.
The Hunger Games, written by Suzanne Collins, tells an action-packed tale from Katniss Everdeen's point of view. 74 years before the story took place, districts waged war against the Capitol and were unsuccessful. One of their terms of surrender was to hold an annual fight to the death, called the Hunger Games. Two teens were picked from each district to be on this televised blood bath. Katniss' sister was chosen to compete, but Katniss volunteered as tribute. Peeta was picked to be her male partner. Winning the Hunger Games would mean that they'd come out alive and their impoverished district would be rewarded gifts and, most importantly, food.

The Secrets Held Inside

By: Shannon F.

In the book Keeping you a Secret the author Julie Ann Peters  quickly introduces us to the two main characters Holland and Cece.  This books main theme I believe is honesty. This book is about overcoming the truth even though you may not like it.Keeping you a Secret is a book that keeps you engaged thought most of the book. This book is a good read for teens due to the fact that some can relate to it and people like reading books they can relate to. I would suggest this book to a lot of people. I enjoyed this book and what it was about. It did not paint a “perfect” picture of life like some books do. It showed how real life is and that is what made me enjoy it. I also though parts of this book can be retrieved as very powerful because of the way the author worded some of the chapters. This book was very real and I would recommend it to any teenager.

A Song Of Ice And England

Tudors, by Peter Ackroyd, is the first historical non-fiction book that I can honestly recommend to other people. If you like the Tudor reign of England, read this book. If you like sarcastic authors discussing religious reform, read this book. If you like A Song Of Ice And Fire, read this book.

Divergence Threatens Our Society

By: Khevna J.
The book that I am reviewing is called Divergent, which is at present a popular book. Veronica Roth wrote this story, along with the next two books in the trilogy, Insurgent and Allegiant. It is a young adult dystopian novel set in a society that is divided into five factions, each of which represents a character trait. Abnegation represents selflessness, Amity represents kindness, Erudite represents knowledge, Candor represents honesty, and Dauntless represents fearlessness and bravery. When people turn sixteen years old, they must take a test, which is a simulation, and later choose which faction they want to be in. In order to be admitted into their faction of choice, they need to undergo initiation, which is a process that determines whether people are capable of becoming a part of that faction. If a person fails initiation, he/she will become factionless, and will not be a part of any faction.

That Hobbit Dude That Did Something Cool Before The Other Hobbit Dude

By: Nick L.
In The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien is a mythical tale about hobbits, dwarfs, wizards, trolls, and a gold loving dragon. Tolkien not only wrote this book but created an entire universe of books that go along with this one. The books have prompted huge Hollywood movies with The Hobbit being the newest in the franchise. The movie how ever is the farthest thing from the book and takes huge liberties and creates new story. If you want to know the real story of Bilbo you can't trust Hollywood. You'll just have to read the book this time.

A Perfect Princess

By Upasana I.

Set in Manhattan, New York, Meg Cabot's The Princess Diaries is the story of an ordinary ninth grader whose life changes when she finds out she is the princess and the future ruler of a country. Everything she thought she had figured out becomes the most complicated part of her life and she begins to wonder if she can handle it all.
Mia Thermopolis, an ordinary ninth grader who lives in Greenwich Village in lower Manhattan, thinks very low of herself and has barely any self-confidence. She lives with her single mother. Her biggest worries in life start with her crush on Josh Richter, the hottest boy in school, avoiding Lana, the bully, to getting good grades and keeping her friends.
But when her father comes by to tell her that she is the heir to the Genovian throne, Mia's life changes completely. Now, attending balls, taking princess lessons and spending time with her Grandmère, the queen of Genovia, become priorities in her life and she is unsure whether she can handle it all.
Cabot's writing makes me want to keep reading. Her amazing talent at keeping the vernacular of the characters going throughout the book brings the characters to life. I feel I am actually living the story. Mia is the type of character you can relate with in the beginning of the book but after her life changes, she becomes a completely different person. When things start to take an unpredictable turn, the story pulls the reader in and makes them want to know more. The book's ending leads on for the sequel, The Princess Diaries, Volume II: Princess in the Spotlight, which I expect to be great. This is the first book of Cabot's that I am reading and I already love her style of writing. I am definitely looking forward to reading the sequel to The Princess Diaries and I expect to read the other twelve books in the series as well. I encourage you to read this book as I feel it is one of the best books I have read and I think you will feel that way too!

Shake It Up, Baby

                                            By Sarah K.
Twist and Shout, by Gabriel, is about two men, Dean Winchester and Castiel J. Novak, living in California in the 1960’s. The two first see each other at a party thrown at a girl’s sorority house, but it isn’t until Dean offers Cas a ride home that they have their first conversation, at a quaint little diner over milkshakes. To Cas, Dean, the motorcycle-racing, leather-jacket-wearing, bad boy that everyone wants, having any interest in him seems unbelievable. But to Dean, Cas, the glasses-wearing, doctor-to-be, is quite a catch. They fall head over heels in love. But the war looms over their heads like a depressing rain cloud that just might burst and when Dean gets drafted it seems like the worst has happened. Though they’ve both agreed their relationship is one where “goodbye” just means “see you soon” the distance puts a strain on them. Dean comes back a changed man, haunted by what he’d seen overseas, and Cas desperately tries to pull him out of it. Some things though, just leave you too damaged and the nightmares Dean won’t talk to anyone about rip their relationship apart at the seams. By the time he’s realized his mistakes it might be too late for both of them.

Writing book hits close to the bone

By Kelsi P.

Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg is a non-fiction, instructional guideline that helps free the reader’s inner writer. Other well known novels by Natalie Goldberg are Wild Mind, Thunder & Lightning, and Old Friend from Far Away. In her intriguing novel, Writing Down the Bones, she gives numerous tips and wise pieces of advice on how to become the best writer the reader can become. She uses creative chapter names such as “Fighting Tofu”, “Man Eats Car” and “Writing is not a McDonald’s Hamburger” to keep the reader interested and curious on what the chapter may consist of. Throughout the book there are constant suggestions that Goldberg reinstates every few chapters that she strongly supports. Some of these suggestions consist of writing in many different places to get the feeling of multiple surroundings to feel inspired and not pressured to write. Also, she explains how writing can be about anything. It can be a sad memory the writer may have never been willing to share openly about or it can be about the puddles in rainstorm or the colors on the leaves. In the novel she makes it very clear to the reader that everything is significant and you should acknowledge it for what it is, by saying its name and giving details to really involve a reader in one’s writing.

Insurgent Rises To the Occasion

By Marisol M.

Divergent’s sequel, Insurgent written by bestselling author Veronica Roth, is packed with romance, action, and eventful twists. Tris Prior was left with traumatic events when she was left off at the end of Divergent; the death of both her parents, murdering one of her best friends, and the chaotic war that was being controlled by Erudite. Tris, Tobias, and a couple of others arrive at the Amity compound where they are granted a stay for as long as they want.
