Equality or Injustice

By Partha P.

Anthem was an interesting and thought-provoking book. Ayn Rand delivered another dystopian society book that makes us question where our own society is heading. Are we rumbling towards a communist society with 'equality'? Or are we still on the path of democracy? Anthem makes us take these issues into light. It starts of with our awkward main character equality 7-2521, who wants to be a scholar badly. He was a smart kid and was always reprimanded for it.

When the day finally came, he stood in front of the council of vocations, hoping to be a scholar. Instead, he becomes a street sweeper. After some time as a street sweeper, he could stole some materials from the scholars. He works on them inside his tunnels, all by himself, which is illegal. He shouldn't be there, but does not feel bad about it. One day when street sweeping, sees a girl that he likes. He sees her and thinks of the place of mating. He calls her the golden one, for the color of her hair. After some time of finagling with the stolen items, he invent s the light bulb. Amazed by his discovery, he waits until the scholars from all over the world meet to sow them. He believes that they will be happy, and make him a scholar. To find out how they react, read the book for yourself.
I found that the book was highly interesting. The main character, equality 7-2521 was an awkward, yet sweet character. He lives in a society with a sense of innocence that makes you look at him like a child. Ayn Rand has written more dystopian novels, such as Atlas Shrugged. I love this book and look forward to reading Atlas shrugged.
