This book review has a boring title

   By Isela Flores

Out of my mind is a very interesting book in so many ways and I suggest most teens to read this book.  Melody is a 11 year old girl who was told by a doctor that she has cerebral palsy BUT what doctors do not understand is that Melody is a very intelligent girl.  She has a phenomenal memory, but is unable to walk or hold a fork all she can do is put move both thumbs.

When Melody was a little girl,  her parents took her to the doctor. The doctor didn't even hesitate to say that Melody was retarded and mentally handicapped. The doctor suggested that her mother will bring her to a place where her she does not have to deal with her or take care of her so their parents can just move on with their lives.  Melody’s parents did not even listen to the advice or suggestion that the doctor gave them instead she just slapped the doctor in the face.

When Melody was in the ages 4-10 years old she was homeschooled until her parents decided to put her into a Elementary school. She attended Spaulding Street Elementary school but teachers, and doctors expected her not to learn anything. Teachers went over the alphabet hundreds of times but Melody got annoyed but she had no way to express herself.  Melody neighbor Ms. Valencia was a great example to Melody. She always encouraged her to stay in school, grow, and learn.
Melody was in fifth grade, she was placed in the inclusion class. Melody was excited and nervous at the same time. She couldn't believe that she would participate in a regular class room with "regular" kids. Once Melody started to like school, kids started to treat her like she was really mentally retarded but in reality Melody was smarter than all the kids that were picking on her.  One day she decided to join a math team and all the people on the team including the teacher did not like her or at least did not want her on the team.

Ms.Valencia got Melody a special computer called a Medi-talker so she can participate in the math competitions and also communicate with other students.. Melody brought her Medi-Talker  to school and all of a sudden people started to like her because they can could communicate with her. A girl name Claire HATED Melody because people liked Melody for who she was. When Melody started to go to competitions Melody answered most of questions and once the team was asked to go to Florida for a competition the teacher told Melody’s mother that they would be leaving the airport in the afternoon but there was going to be a rain storm that day so the teacher called every team parent BUT Melody’s mother to tell them that they were going to leave in the morning instead of the afternoon.
So Melody never ended up going but the good news for her was that the team came in second place but if Melody had gone they most likely would of came in first place like they usually do. Once the teacher came back they all apologized to Melody but Melody did not need the apology because Melody already knew how they felt about her but the only reason she accepted the apology was because her mother wanted to teach Melody that the team did something wrong to her.
This is a great book and there is so much more to it so I suggest other students to read “Out of my mind”
