This has a horrible title

By Abby K.

The Graduate by Charles Webb focuses on 20-year old Ben Braddock, a college graduate who has an affair with his father's friend's wife/neighbor, Mrs.Robinson. Ben is confused about his direction in life, and constantly worries about his future, while his parents breathe down his neck pestering him about continuing his career. Ben continues this self destructive path until Mrs. Robinson's daughter, Elaine, comes home from school. Ben is forced by his parents to go on a date with her, and he immediately falls in love with her. Elaine, however, isn't so sure about Ben. She also doesn't know about Ben's relations with her mother. When Elaine finds out, she goes off to marry another man. Ben, desperate to marry Elaine, crashes the wedding. Elaine and Ben decide that they really do want a future together, and they run out of the church and onto a city bus.

The Graduate is a really great novel from that time period. It's a simple but very elegantly written book. Also, it's absolutely hilarious. It's brings light to subject most people are wildly uncomfortable talking about in a humorous way. It also discusses more serious topics, like the huge disconnection between people and their parent's generation. A really good novel overall. I'd suggest it, but only after you see the movie adaption.
