Perks of Reading a Good Book

By : Geena G.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky is an emotional and moving novel about a shy young boy when faced with the harsh reality of his teenage life. The realistic-fiction novel follows a socially-awkward and depressed, yet completely brilliant Charlie, as he navigates his way through his freshman year. He begins his high school career as a loner with no friends, desperately trying to remain below the radar and escape from that school as fast as possible. That all changes when he meets Sam and Patrick, two insane half-siblings who show him that maybe ducking under the radar isn't the best way to live.

Charlie starts high school terrified and critical. He starts his year out with more enemies than friends after fighting a guy who was picking on him. He's completely miserable, but goes to a football game due to his parent's request. There, he meets Patrick, who immediately accepts him. Patrick introduces Charlie to his sister, who Charlie instantly falls for, and Charlie's life is turned around. The story follows the young boy as him and his friends explore the highs and lows of teenage life, from late night drives with best friends, to feeling inevitably alone, to falling in love and being heartbroken, to realizing that real friends will never be gone, despite the distance between them.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a modern classic and can be easily compared to the Catcher in the Rye because of the lack of emotions from the narrator and the somewhat confusing storyline. Sadly, this perfect coming of age story is the only published book by Stephen Chbosky, but hopefully more are coming soon. This book is very insightful and moving, and will make you question your philosophy of life. I would recommend this book to children 14 and older, in hopes that it will be as thoroughly enjoyed as it was for me.
