Just Do It

By Pedro C.

Just Write: Here's How, it's written by Walter Dean Myers, the bestselling author of the book Monster. Myers has won multiple awards for his literature and was even appointed the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature for his writing. He was born in 1937 and passed away at the age of 73 in 2014. By the time he died he had over 100 books published and over 15 awards and honors. He is said to have had a tough time as a teenager when he has growing up and often refers to books and other literature as a haven for himself. He then evolved from being a reader to a writer to write the books he wanted to read as kid. Just Write would be classified under non-fiction in the literature section.

This book was written much like a song would be written by Beethoven or Mozart. Myers starts off with a slower pace and escalates into a more intense rhythm of reading. I enjoyed this pacing and his word choice was excellently put onto paper. The one thing I didn't like was how everything was straightforward. There were no subtle details that you could only catch by the previous paragraph, or only understand by going further into the book. I could assume that is was like this because it is a book for a teacher, where Myers is doing his best to get the point of the lesson across clearly, since his students wouldn't have the option to ask him the questions they had.
Just Write is suited towards the newcomers to the writing process, or even those who are advanced but want to go over the basics. Anyone who is interested in learning or getting tips from another author should read this book. It would actually be a good idea for all writers to read this book even if it was to just touch up their foundations. Readers who want to read Myers's Just Write can find it at a library, Barnes and Nobles, and online through Amazon or Ebay, Myers even has a website where you can shop all of his books from at walterdeanmyers.net.
