Not that Kind of Tell All

By Tara B.
Lena Dunham brings forth a gloriously candid book of essays in the revolutionary novel "Not that Kind of Girl." Dunham illustrates what it means to be twenty something and coming to the realization that life doesn't uphold the promises you were once led to believe. The stories are often so honest and wrenching that they can be difficult to read but nonetheless, the book is impossible to put down.

While it is composed of individual essays, the novel remains cohesive throughout. The first section talks about love and sex, the second, body image, following with friendship work and the big picture. In them, she discusses what it feels like to be in a room full of men who underestimate you, being ten pounds overweight despite eating everything your doctor recommends, and above all, "having the guts to believe your story deserves to be told."

With honesty and staggering intimacy comes mature themes that I

would only recommend to young adults. Though, at some point, everyone

should read it. "Not that Kind of Girl" is a a powerful read for any

young woman in our culture. Lena Dunham is a masterful writer with a

quippy and unique voice and I would read books she may publish in the

future.
