The Maze R(eader)unner

By Brian B.

The novel Maze Runner recently became extremely popular when a movie with the same name based on the storyline was released. The book is written by James Dashner who also authored the sequels, Scorch Trials and The Death Cure, and a prequel, The Kill Order. The genre of these books is dystopian suspense.

An area called the Glade is inhabited by a group of teenage boys. Each month, a new boy, completely deprived of memory except for their name, is introduced to the Glade through an elevator called the Box. A community has established in the Glade by the time Thomas arrives. Each night, a door to the Maze, which surrounds the Glade, closes and protects the boys from the Grievers, who attempt to kill anyone who enters the Maze. Each morning, the door reopens and each month a boy continues to arrive from the Box. That is, until a girl arrives, unconscious and holding a note that says "She's the last one." The plot takes an exciting turn as the mysteries of the Maze and the outside world are slowly unraveled by anxious and paranoid Gladers.
The plot is very exciting and unpredictable, but somewhat slow. A lot of time is spent developing the personalities of and interactions between characters which helps to form the suspense when the plot gets dramatic. I think that the deep characters would also draw more readers to the sequels.
This is definitely a book a teenager or young adult should read. The idea and story is very similar to The hunger Games, so those who enjoyed that series should consider reading Maze Runner. As mentioned before, there is also a movie.
This book is available online for as low as $6 and the series as a whole can also be purchased for fanatics. It is likely that your local library also has it on inventory.
