War Brothers or Dead Brothers? (This is not really a critical essay. Nice, title, though.)

By Ashley J

War Brothers, by Sharon E. McKay, was a novel about a boy named Jacob who was taken by the LRA, the Lord's Resistance Army which is run by a man named Joseph Kony. Jacob describes what it was like to be captured by them, and how they managed to escape. Jacob also gives brief insight into what their life was like after they, Jacob and his friends, escaped and returned to society.

I liked Jacob's character because you saw from his eyes how he didn't want to become one of those soldiers, but he had no choice. The book is written so you get an idea of what those children actually go through, how they change.

I believe this story was well written. This story brought to life what it is like for child soldiers, a topic that isn't talked about very much. It brings to light the horrors and brainwashing these children go through. It captivates its readers from the beginning. If you don't like reading about children who are trained to kill or reading about so much death and gruesome lifestyles I would not recommend you read this book. If you want to, be my guest. The story is amazing and it gives you great insight into a topic that isn't talked about in regular history classes.
