This should have had a clever title

By Nicolas K.
For this book review I read The Martian by Andrew Weir. This book was freaking amazing. Andrew Weir has a unique log style of writing mixed by traditional narrative that gives great insight on the thoughts and feelings of Mark Watney as he is stranded on Mars.
The log sections of the book are written by Mark Watney himself. The humor and sarcasm mixed with the overall brilliance of the character give a unique reading experience transporting you to the surface of Mars where the struggle to survive is almost as difficult as getting Mark home alive. About a third of the way through the book the narrative temporarily jumps to the perspective of the NASA command center where they realize he is alive and struggle to contact Mark and bring him home alive. The busyness of the NASA command center reaches a perfect contrast with the vast solidarity of the martian surface. The writing brings suspense and danger around every problem Mark and NASA need to solve while maintaining humor in the face of impending doom. The book offers a unique scientific journey across the open plain of Mars, tapping into the wonder of science fiction while maintaining a relatable perspective of what the world could be like in the not too distant future. This book was brilliant, and a pleasure to read. The unique writing style and scientific focus as well as some kick ass characters were each genius in their own way. I will be on the lookout for anything Andrew Weir writes in the future.
