Thou Shalt Read and Review

By Anthony M.

Steven Franks's The Pen Commandments is a lighthearted, humorous writing guide that introduces beginner writers to ten easy-to-follow steps for improving their craft. From "Thou Shalt Honor Thy Reader" to "Thou Shalt Take Pleasure in Thy Pen" to "Thou Shalt Not Waste Words," this book features some simple rules almost any writer can utilize. These rules are drawn from Frank's own classroom, where he spent many years teaching in both middle and high school. The author's ultimate aim is to provide direction and purpose for aspiring writers who are wandering the world looking for a way to channel their inner thoughts and passions.

Steven Frank provides the readers with a structured (somewhat) guide filled with anecdotes to his life and his students' along with several additional rules to inspire his readers. This book is surely entertaining and humorous throughout, however, the focus on puns and young student life may dissuade more mature readers to close the book and find another writing on craft. As a student reader, this book works well in communicating instruction without becoming too boring or hard to follow. This book is meant for grade school students and that is evident in the examples Frank relays and his overall tone. Older individuals or more advanced writers should look elsewhere, although this book still has some useful knowledge that anyone can take advantage of.
This book is a must-read for any middle or high school students, regardless of whether or not they are interested in pursuing a writing career. Well developed writing skills are essential in all aspects of life and this book is one of the few completely targeted towards students. This book could be useful for older individuals, however the style and tone may not be the mature material some writers are looking for.
