The USA Not as Great as We Think

By Aiden M.
Farewell to Manzanar is a heartwarming, and wrenching book. It shows how fear can make us segregate people, and treat them horribly. This book will expose what the United States government has tried to have the public forget about.

Jeanne Wakatsuki was a regular japanese american girl. She was part of a fishing community, and was content with her life. Then the surprise attack by the Japanese on pearl harbor occurred, and created a fear and hatred in white Americans, directed towards all Japanese. With this fear of japanese spies and supporters, the government accuses Jeanne's father of giving oil to japanese submarines. They arrest him and round up all Japanese americans on the west coast, and put them in internment camps, This includes Jeanne Wakatsuki and her family(except her father). She must now try to adapt to the way of life in her new life in Manzanar.
As an avid reader, I would rate this book 5 stars out of 5. I deem it this rating because of how revealing it was, and because it shows a tremendous struggle of a young person to find their place in the world, which I can relate to. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read heartbreaking, and warming books. This book can be found at Nashua High School South.
