Life of Intrigue

By Pranav P.

Life of Pi is a novel told in the first person point of view by the main character, Piscine "Pi" Patel.  The book is written by Yann Martel.  The fantasy novel is about the story Pi (many years after the incident)  recalls about his childhood of when Pi and his family have to move their zoo from their home in Pondicherry, India, to North America.  Their journey by boat got interrupted by a storm at sea that caused the boat to capsize.  Pi, an orangutang, an injured zebra, and a hyena and a tiger who was named Richard Parker, were lost at sea on a small life boat.  The story is about his struggles to get food, water, and live with these animals on such a small boat. After Pi drifts to mexico, he is questioned by two people from the Japanese Ministry of Transport (The ship was Japanese)  about the shipwreck.  The officials did not believe his story, so he tells them an alternate story where the animals were replaced with people, to make the story more believable.  It is then left to the reader of the story to imagine which story they think is real.

I really enjoyed this story because it was filled with many different plot twists and took your imagination on a joy ride.  The story had so many vivid details on many different scenes that it would be like taking your mind on a roller coaster.  It lets you picture all of the beautiful scenes in the story, such as Pi's zoo in Pondicherry.
I would encourage everyone to read this book.  It is suitable for all ages.  This book is left mostly to the imagination, so even elementary school age kids would enjoy this story.  The book leaves most of the work to the readers imagination, so the reader has more control over how they perceive the book than anything else in this story.  Ultimately, I think this is an entertaining read.  You should be able to buy it at local book store, the Google Play Store, iBookstore, and many other places.
