It pays not to be smart

By Amanda B.

The Testing is a novel by Joelle Charbonneau that replicates a dystopian society where once you finish schooling, you are put through a series of tests in order to decipher those whom the society can benefit from. This story follows the life of Cia as she goes through the testing and loses the friends she gained and have to decide who can be trusted and who is bad.

This story is very good if you are interested in books such as "The Giver", "Divergent" or "The Hunger Games". It had good detail and showed the faults of this type of society. But also, it accurately showed the challenges that a teenage girl is going through and the stress that can be pushed onto someone of her demeanor.  This book evoked both empathy and anxiety with simple descriptions and lovely situations. This book had a good ending and could easily have another installment that would captivate readers just as this one has.
Along with the good, this book also had some flaws. These flaws included some holes in the plot and a lack of character development. There wasn't much back story involved with the first chapters which would've been a nice add on. This book started on an off note, where I didn't even know what was going on. It was just an odd place to start. I jumped right into her everyday life instead of easing into it.
This book is easily one of my new favorites. It is easy to read and comprehend. Plus this book captures emotion and portrays it well. I would, in fact recommend this book to anyone who craves a dystopian society where there is a true heroin, that's not clad in armor, but in wit.
