A Passage to the British Raj

By Rishi A. K.

Bringing an unbiased look into India during the reign of the British, writer Edward Morgan Forster creates an impartial and page turning novel. E. M. Foster's novel, A Passage to India, is in my mind one of the greatest novels ever written.  Dr. Aziz ( a Muslim Indian Doctor)  and Adela Quested ( a White British girl) take turns being protagonists as the novel switches perspectives allowing for the reader to truly feel, as they are a part of both characters lives.

The plot of this novel revolves around a trip to the Marabar Caves. During this trip Adela and Dr. Aziz end up alone in the cave and Adeal flees due to Dr. Aziz allegedly assaulting her. The aftermath of this situation and the racial tension develop into the plot of this story.
This novel's graceful writing style and unique story line make it an incredibly fun read. Researching E. M. Foster's life brings to light that he was a British man writing during the later years of the British rule over India. This makes it ever so impressive that E. M. Foster was able to create a novel that truly represents the struggles in India during this time period. This novel portrays British rule as oppressing and abusing of power, a perspective not commonly seen during this time period. E. M. Foster not only manages to create a unique perspective but also manages to create a emotional roller coaster that engages the reader and makes them feel as though they are part of the plot.
This is the first novel of E. M. Foster's that I have read, and I truly enjoyed it and saw first hand what all of the hype is about. Though this novel is known to be E. M. Fosters flag ship work, I plan on reading his other work too. I feel that everyone must read this novel once in their life.
