Nothing but the Plain Truth

By Rose M.

Jodi Picoult's Plain Truth was a captivating novel full of plot twists and intriguing characters.

Plain Truth takes place in Pennsylvania where an Amish family; the Fishers, wake up to find a dead baby in their barn. With no one on the farm expecting a child, it was a mystery in the making. As police start to take notice in the case, it is brought up that the baby was born breathing and was smothered to death. With the thought of murder, cops start to suspect that Katie Fisher, the eighteen year old unwed Amish girl, had killed the baby. Katie is then sent to trial where she meets Ellie, a bold and intelligent lawyer who will defend her in court. By judges orders, Ellie must stay with Katie while they prepare for the trial.
Ellie's way of life is very different from the Fishers. She is not Amish and she must learn to adapt to their ways. One discovery that Ellie makes is that having a baby out of wedlock is almost unspeakable in the Amish community—not only is Katie at risk of being sent to jail, but she is being shunned from her family, friends, and community. The compelling adventure that Ellie takes is filled with many complications. There was never a dull moment as every chapter held a new surprise.
Jodi Picoult's way of being able to see everyone's point of view makes the book very realistic. She blends the character's religion perfectly with the harsh rules of the courtroom. While the characters were well developed and she was able to build a lot of suspense, the book was fairly long and seemed a little drawn out.
This novel is definitely worth the read. The novel was compelling until the end, and was summed up perfectly in the final chapter, making the read all worth it.
