The Chosen One

By Estefania G.

Lois Lowry is known for her versatility and invention as a writer. Two of her books have won the Newbery Medal  including The Giver, and Number the Stars. The Giver is a fiction novel and was published in 1993 . This novel is set in a society of utopian. Followed by a twelve year old boy named Jonas.

Everyone in the community is the same except Jonas. No one dares to ask questions why they are doing what they are being ask to. Each citizen are assigned to their appropriate family units. Twelve year olds are assigned with jobs. Jonas was chosen for a special job. The Giver is a mysterious man that instructs Jonas through his new assigned job. Soon Jonas learns that power lies in feelings.

There were not many important characters it was just The Giver and Jonas that were the main characters. The plot of the story was strong. This novel left me thinking what a strange society they lived in. It's what made me interesting in reading it. The pacing of the book was great. At the end of the book it leaves the reader want to know what happens next.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone. Knowing that this book has a series it make me want to read the other books. This novel has a powerful ending and it's interesting to read.
