A Natural Cowgirl

By Josh K.

True Grit is the story of Mattie Ross, a fourteen year old girl whose father was shot by the coward Tom Chaney. She wants nothing more than revenge. She reclaims his gun and recruits the dangerous U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn. Together, and with the help of Texas Ranger LeBoeuf they set out to capture the infamous criminal.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. All in all True Grit  is definitely a book I will remember. The book tends to use more of Victorian english language then your classic cowboy western slang. True Grit perfectly captures what it must've been like to have been a teenage girl attempting to go on your own during this time period. The book teaches you the struggles of life in the "wild west", showing how everyone is out to better themselves, and how friends would turn on one another just for money.

Along with every masterpiece comes some cons. My biggest concern was the fact that it seemed as though Mattie never formed a bond with Marshal Cogburn, she never relaxed around him and her character did not seem to grow in that aspect. Also I feel as though the book did not go into too much depth on how after she got her revenge what would be of her, would she really feel fulfilled? Did spending that money and going out for all that time really satisfy her and fill in the hole of her father's death? I think not.

All in all this book is world renowned for a reason. I suggest this book to anyone who is willing to read it. If you are a fan of the western genre this book has to be your highest priority, I believe that this book captures the western atmosphere better than any book I have ever read.
