Standing out

By Kelli A.
Tomboy, by Liz Prince, is a great graphic memoir about what it's like to grow up differently from those around you. She shows what it was like for her to grow up with her own style and breaking free from what society calls normal. It is a great book for showing that it's okay to be yourself. Liz shows how she stood out from when she was little, and stayed with her throughout her life.

I really enjoyed reading Tomboy, because I could relate to most things Liz went through. The book showed her story well as a graphic memoir, but could have shown more stories about her teenage years. Some of the important friends in her life could have been explained in more detail, but you could see the effect they had in her life. It paced her life well, but was a bit long for a memoir.

If you think you can relate to being out of the "norm", or you find it interesting to read about the life of a teenage trying to find her place, then this is a great book to check out. This is Liz Prince's only published work, but she has been awarded Goodreads Choice Awards for Best Graphic Novel and Comic. She has her own website called lizprincepowers.com with her book and art work, and I suggest checking it out.
