Is It Really a Selection?

By Aijah H.

Recently I read The Selection by Kiera Cass. The Selection is the first book in her Selection series. The main character America Singer is thrown into a world of competition and danger as she and thirty-four other girls enter the Selection. The Selection is a prestigious competition for the Prince of Illéa. Prince Maxon is the heartthrob of Illéa, loved by all. Except for America. In their world, everyone lives in an eight-level caste system. The Royal family is at the top, and the lowest level being workers. America loves her life in the fifth level and wishes to stay with her secret love Aspen. Forced to put her name into the drawing for the Selection, America now has to compete for the Prince's love, but only wants to stay in for the money they pay her poor family. Eventually, a love triangle develops as America realizes Maxon is deeper than she ever thought.

A beautifully written book, author Kiera Cass shows a fantasy romance with even a bit of action that anyone would enjoy. I loved the scenery description and how I could picture the characters clearly. Unlike some romance novels I've read, The Selection shows a couple destined for each other, but they won't accept their feelings. This book shows deep struggle and with the thirty-seven main characters, there's someone for everyone to relate to. This book is well written and has 4 sequels, and it's still growing. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a new series to dive into.
Kiera Cass is a well-written author and one I have followed for a while but never had time before now to read her books. Her ability to create a whole new world is amazing and inspiring. Readers can see her skill and easily dive into this world of hardship and tough choices. I plan on reading the rest of the series as America has become a beloved character to me.
