The Long Road Ahead

By Tyler M.
Washington is a black man in 1874 fighting in the 10th cavalry. He and and other black men from the 10th cavalry are hoping on a train to fight in another battle. Wolf, a Cheyenne warrior go to fight for the other side.

Washington in order to get money for his family he left his mother and sister. He hops on the train to go to Texas. Washington's cavalry needs to keep the tribe that resides there now from taking it back. They are also sent to take the native americans there and take them to reservations. This will start the brief and brutal war called the Red River War. Wolf is a part of the tribe he also leaves his mother and sister to get them to stay in the plains of Texas. He also will go out and hunt for food for them.
They successfully bring the tribe to a camp.  They separated the girls from them and the girls were held captive.  Winters were the worst for Wolf and the rest they lost there nice lodging and blankets. Wolf walked around the camp he saw people he knew. "Brother" he asked himself. Wolf and the other tribes there join up and start the Red River War.  Wolf goes out to fight the men who took them away. Washington and Wolf cross paths many times but, never join up. The white men told them the girls will not be set free until you surrender in this war. They set up a way to surrender by giving their horses up and weapons. They move camps and torture the natives. When the natives moved Washington thought of some old african song the clanking of chains. Wash thought of his grandpa.
This was a good book and I would read it again. Hopefully the author has others like it.
