The Bloody Genocide

by Kaisha N.

The book i'm reviewing is named Season of Blood: A Rwandan Journey written by Fergal Keane and originally published in 1995. The genres this book can be found under is cultural African, history, nonfiction and war. He is also the author of Wounds and Road of Bones which fall under the genres love, war and history.  The story takes you back to April 1994 when Rwandan president, president Habyarimana's jet was shot down and a one hundred day massacre began which left over a million dead throughout the country . Fergal Keane journeys through Rwanda as a journalist experiencing the mass killings and uncovers a hideous truth while being there.

As bad as it sounds to say because of all the tragic and heinous deaths that happen in the book, I liked the way it was written; it made you feel like you were actually there with him going along the journey. It really tells how the Tutsis were gruesomely murdered mostly by their Hutu neighbors. I think it's well balanced to show both sides. The book is also great for history just like most of the books about the holocaust because they both show how the government and other near by counties reacted a bit late to the genocides going on around them. One thing I did not like about the book was that it was really slow at first in the beginning so it was hard to pay attention which unmotivated me to read it.
Overall, I would recommend this book to others just because it takes you on a crazy but educational trip. It's good to know about history other than just our countries just so this devastating history doesn't repeat itself here or anywhere else. Fergal Keane was on the scene almost immediately to see the aftermath of the killings and describes what's going on during that time in Rwanda perfectly.
