People who Roam in the Dark

by Nathan T.

The Midnighters: the secret hour, by Scott Westerfeld, is a action drama story about Jessica Day, and her newly met friends. Jessica is from Chicago, Illinois but she recently moved to the small town of Bixby, Oklahoma. The book starts off with a 2nd person view of Rex Greene, a student at bixby high. We meet his friends Dess and Melissa early on in the book. Jessica ends up "befriending" Rex, Dess, and Melissa. Jessica and her new friends are midnighters, people who are able to live in the 25th hour of the day when everything else is frozen. The 25th hour is the secret hour where an ancient species hides away, this species are known as the Darklings.

In my opinion this book has been one of the few series that i want to read all of. It's exciting and it is filled with adventure. The book is fast paced, with action happening in the third chapter. Westerfield keeps the writer on his/her toes. The writing is about 7th grade level, this allowed me to read through most of the book without having to read every line through twice.

The characters can have work done. The backup characters are very plain, only consisting of one trait. Also, all of the main characters seem to be static besides for the developing a friendship between each other. The three of the five protagonist are your stereotypical goths, wearing all black, shutting out life, and lurking in the shadows. However later in the book you see some of the goths personal hobbies that make them unique, they still need some work.

I've been trashing this book a lot. However it's a really good book. It has a great plot, and I enjoyed it greatly. If you like a book with; action, fantasy, and a bit of drama then this is for you.
