Shadowhunters, Downworlders, and Mundanes! Oh My!

By Cristle C.
Cassandra Clare is one of one of those lucky fan fiction writers that made it big with her own series. She is also known for The Infernal Devices and The Dark Artifices. City of Bones is book one of six in The Mortal Instruments series. In this book a red-head named Clary Fray plans a night at New York's Pandemonium Club. She had every intention of having a fun filled night with best friend Simon Lewis, but her night took a sudden turn as she witnessed a murder. From then on her life was changed. Clary has gotten herself thrown into a world of downworlders: vampires,  demons, warlocks, werewolves. And the most fascinating ones of all, the shadow-hunters. These demon hunting teens bring Clary a new life full of adventure, hardship, and love. She also works to solve the mystery of who, or what, she truly is.

There are many books and stories about vampires, demons, and warlocks. This makes worrying that City of Bones will be worth the read. You'll always find similarities between books have have the same creatures in them but, City of Bones is a very unique story. Cassandra Clare's fan fiction days shine through at times. Her writing is definitely meant for young teens, but her plot can be enjoyed by many. It's very easy to attach yourself to specific characters, Clare tends to spend more time developing some characters more than others. She also has a habit of going against what a characters set personality is like. Although the story was extremely interesting, it does seem to jump around a lot. Interactions between characters or details that you need to know to understand background stories are often hard to understand. I found myself asking "what, who, how, when, where, and why?" more than I would have preferred.
Even with it's flaws I would recommend this book, and whole series, to almost anyone. There are so many twists and turns that'll leave you on your toes. I spent one week neglecting my social life and responsibilities to finish this series, I could find myself dreading the last page of the last book. This book has an exciting and unexpected event around every corner. Also, If you love confusing cliffhangers that make you anxious and desperate to pick up the next book, you'll enjoy City of Bones.
