A Man Living Separate

By Chris G.

The year is April 1992. Christopher McCandless, from Annandale Virginia, hitchhiked to Alaska, and walked into the wilderness near Mt. McKinley. After graduating college, he abandoned his family and most of his belongings to start a life in the wilderness, where he roamed in the southwest until finally hitchhiking to Alaska.  Four months later, his body was found inside an abandoned bus.

Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer backtracks the events that led up to the day McCandless was found dead after he left college. Krakauer describes McCandless's severely self-disciplined personality. He also brings up several reasons as to why McCandless chose this path separate from society.
In some ways, the story was inspiring, depending on the way one looks at it. It brings up the idea of living on your own terms, rather than living your life the way others want you to. McCandless went on this path looking to clear himself of his history, and seek peace.  Not that you need to go into the Alaskan wilderness to live on your own terms or go that extreme, but sometimes people need to focus on themselves more and their future, also that preparation is huge.
