Do I Stay or Do I Go? (The Hobbit) Book Review

By Cameron M.
Who knew little creatures called Hobbits went on adventures. The author J.R.R Tolkien wrote an interesting story explaining the adventure of a particular "hobbit" by the name of Bilbo Baggins. I am sure most of you have heard about the book called the The Hobbit at least once in your lives. This is a wonderful fantasy about a Hobbit (Bilbo Baggins) who gets wrapped up in an adventure fraught with danger and lessons to be learned about life. This story is a very interesting, suspenseful, and a grabbing free read.

One morning, Bilbo Baggins gets a thump on his green, circular door to his cozy hobbit hole. He answers the door to the wandering wizard named Gandalf, who is using this visit as a little test to see if Bilbo is worthy of participating in an adventure with him and many other dwarves whom Bilbo does not know about yet. When Bilbo fails to cooperate, Gandalf walks off concluding that Bilbo has passed this test. The next day, Mr. Baggins gets another thud on his door, but it is not from Gandalf. Instead, there is a dwarf at the door by the name of Dwalin. Soon, many other dwarves show up, 13 to be exact. The dwarves trash his house, but they eventually release their true intentions of being there. These intentions are to recapture their lost homeland stolen by a dragon named Smaug long ago. After hours of battling with himself, Bilbo reluctantly agrees to take part in this.
Many dangers and excitement comes out of this adventure on the way to the dwarves' homeland, but will they have enough might and power to find out? This answer will only become clear if you read this phenomenal fantasy. Believe it or not, The Hobbit is actually a prelude to J.R.R Tolkien's bestselling series The Lord of the Rings, which consists of three action-packed novels and many more exciting moments.
I enjoyed reading The Hobbit very much. The plotline was very detailed, descriptive, and most importantly fun to read. Nobody likes to read a boring book. I also really enjoyed the suspense piece of the story. An example of the suspense would be the quote "It was an unfortunate remark, for the dragon spouted terrific flames after him, and fast though he sped up the slope, he had not gone nearly far enough to be comfortable before the ghastly head of Smaug was thrust against the opening behind."(227) I really enjoyed how the author emphasized the descriptions of each and every character to get to know them as almost if you are there participating in this adventure. The ending of The Hobbit was phenomenal because it was not rushed and it gave you a way to decompress from all of the action that took place a chapter or two before. I have read stories before that have been great, all except for the endings. The only exception an abrupt ending is if the novel has a sequel.
While there were many things that I enjoyed about The Hobbit, there were also a few things that I did not enjoy. For example, some of the little details were a bit more descriptive than needed and sometimes the book felt slow and drawn out. These parts of the book can get very boring, which at times made me not want to read the book anymore. Same as every other story, the characters seemed like they had more power and influence than that of their descriptions which I do not like most of the times. There are only a few dislikes I have about this book though because it is very well written and interesting for the majority of its content.
If you are reading this review right now and you like suspenseful, mystical, and adventurous stories then The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien is a perfect free read for you. This fantasy is a great way to relax when you have free time. This great novel is a great way pass time because of its interesting and hooking plotline.
Readers can find this story at their local book stores, online, or pretty much anywhere else that sells books because it is such a great piece of literature.
