Rash makes you Itch for More

By Ishan K.

Pete Hautman is an award-winning author who has added another great book to his name. "Rash", a novel about a child living in a futuristic version of America that has been overcome by needs for personal safety. Bo Marsten lives in the United States of America in the year the 2070s. The United States has become obsessed with personal safety and has gone to great lengths to ensure that every individual is safe at all times. Even contact sports like football are now illegal and all but forgotten. Alcohol consumption and unhealthy foods like french fries are illegal now as well.

However, things are about to get a bit more interesting for Bo. He is wrongly accused of giving another kid in the school Karloff, a rash that is now spreading around the school like wildfire. He is now in the penal system like his father and working for a McDonald's pizza factory, where there are a highly illegal football team and coach just as crazy. But an AI Bo created named Birk says he can break Bo out. Can he trust him, or will this just turn out to be another bad decision?
I personally enjoyed this book but felt the ending was a little abrupt and the book to fast paced. The book could have easily gone another hundred pages without destroying the story. It seems to just fly by. The author's writing style was good and he used strong word choice.
I would recommend this book to young adult readers and if you get the chance you should definitely pick this up. It would also make a nice first novel for younger readers.
