The End of the World as We Know It

By Owen L.

World War Z is an entertaining novel that raises questions about future events as the plot progresses. Max Brooks plays the protagonist who is a United Nations Post War Commissioner. This novel looks back at previous events but communicates it in real-time as survivors of the great Zombie War tell their story.

The narrator of the story is a U.N Commissioner who interviews different scientists and survivors of the great Zombie war from around the world. At the start, the zombie virus was believed to have started in China. Patient zero was a young boy from a village in China. Eventually,  the plague spreads around the world, but it was not well known until a large outbreak was discovered in South Africa. In Israel, a national quarantine was built to keep out zombies from entering.
World War Z was an intriguing novel, but it seemed to be too slow paced. Most of the interviews were too long and drawn out. The plot was still exciting as the characters were realistic. Each character had a unique personality and their dialog described them well. Overall, the plot is well written. However, the order of the plot is not well defined so the narrator bounces between different events quickly.
This novel is more aimed at teenagers and adults. The plot is mainly based around zombies and can be hard to comprehend if you're not a fan of the living undead. I would recommend this book to teenagers and young adults who are a fan of science fiction and zombies.
