Journey to the Center of the Book

By Dylan G.

Journey to the Center of the Earth, by Jules Verne is a classic story written all the way back in 1864.  Revolving around Otto Lidenbrock, a tour guide, and Otto's nephew, they take a trip they'll never forget.

Originally written in French, the story has been adapted over time, but still keeps the original touches of Jules that you can feel if you read any of his books. The story is narrated by Axel, Otto Lindenbrock, who is very much a reluctant hero in this story, which appeals to many readers whether it is being read in the 1800's or in the present day. Jules Verne is often considered a man much ahead of his time and the "King of Travel Fiction" and he does not disappointed. I liked very much that Axel was the narrator because the professor, Otto, had much more insight on what they are getting into, so you are almost left in the dark a little about what is fully going on. Axel just wants to survive this whole ordeal so he can get back to his fiancé Grauben, who is also the tour guide, but also he does want his uncle to keep exploring, so he is left in a bit of a pickle throughout the story. After previously reading a few of Verne's other books, he has always carefully chosen a very good narrator, and this is one of his best writing qualities in my opinion.

I find that I have a very hard time trying to find a book that will really entertain me, and Jules Verne books always seem to do the trick. I would recommend this book and any other books written by Jules to readers of any age, or demographic. It is very entertaining and very hard to put down because you are left always wondering exactly what is going to happen next to the characters, which also contributes to Otto's ability to be such a reluctant hero.  The book would also appeal to a reader that would like to read a mystery type of read because like I said earlier, you are always left wondering just exactly what is going to happen next, and with a Jules Verne book, it could be a whole multitude of things.

This book could be found at almost any school, public library, and is available from over 50 stores online.
