Journal of a Survior

By Glen P.
One of the things I have found that really creates a good book is to make the reader get a general feel for the characters they will read throughout the story. Emmy Laybourne amazingly does this by setting a time before the grim reality that befalls "Monument," Colorado. She also manages to tell the main protagonists story through what he writes in his journal which makes the readers really relate to Dean.

Dean Grieder is the embodiment of a typical antisocial high schooler: he isn't popular and keeps to himself. He starts out his day as usual, and heads towards the bus almost missing it. There he sees who will soon become people he has to rely on to survive a horrible tragedy that engulfs the United States. First there was a dangerous hailstorm and then their was the chemical outburst that forced Dean and the others to take refuge at a wal-mart esc store called Greenway. There they have to learn how to stay alive, keep the toxic air out, and how to live with each other.
The way Laybourne gives Dean so much emotion really gives the reader the impression they live through the character. Every action, every decision and everybody will like this book in one way or another as this book has way too much to offer. A really great reed for anyone who wants to dedicate a day of their life to reading as you will not want to put the book down.
