Day 5994

By Katie P.

Published in 2012, David Levithan's novel "Every Day" is a story of a young person who changes bodies every day. Every day, "I wake up,  immediately I have to figure out who I am." (Levithan 1). Male or female, dark-skinned or light-skinned, straight or gay, tall or small, fat or thin. These people are all approximately A's age, which is sixteen, but their lives are all different.

As the story continues A still doesnt have a specific gender. In the story A is described as He when in a male's body, and she when in a female's body. Every day there is a new body to control for the time being. The story starts off with A being in a random boy's body named Justin's. A wakes up in the morning in his body and starts of by checking out his room to see what kind of guy he is; a smelly, tired, and disorganized person. A tries not to mess up anyone's life by messing with family members or in their educational life either, but that changes when he meets Justin's girlfriend, Rhiannon.
A skips school to give Rhiannon a good day because when A accessed Justin's memories he saw how Justin treats Rhiannon. So A takes her to the beach and when they get there he builds sand castles, runs in the water, and lays down on a blanket and talks about great memories they have had, and Rhiannon tells him "Thanks for this, for all of it".( Levithan 15) But as the day comes to an end, A drops her off at her house and goes home to Justin's house. When he gets to justin's room he calls her and tells her that he's sorry for whatever happens tomorrow.
The story continued by A contacting her in a new body the next day. A tells Rhiannon what had happened the day before. At first Rhiannon doesn't believe him, but she starts to put the puzzle pieces together and realized why Justin acted like a completely different person. She was mad at first but then got over it quickly.
In conclusion I believe A was trying to teach us about a couple of things . I think he was trying to tell us to live our lives freely. Another one is, if you love someone so much that you can't stop thinking about them, tell them how you feel and maybe they might feel the same way towards you. I think this story was well written and is very interesting that it was in A's point of view. My favorite part about the book was when he woke up in a new person's body and he looked around and all he saw was post-it notes with nice quotes from family members and friends all over the place . I would definitely recommend the book if you like fiction or even just a great book in particular.
