Putting This Book Down Will be the Bane of your Existence

By Katie H.

The Bane Chronicles by Cassandra Clare, Maureen Johnson, and Sarah Rees Brennan is easily one of the best books I have ever read. A spinoff of the Shadowhunter chronicles, also written by Clare, this collection of short stories will keep you up all night. They all focus on warlock Magnus Bane's many adventures over the last few centuries, from the many reasons he should have been banned from Peru to meeting and befriending a vampire.

This book is a perfect mix of an interesting plot and humorous one-liners. It's impossible not to fall in love with every character -- even the ones who only make a brief appearance for one short story. It would be a great stand-alone book, but it also provides some interesting insight to what made the Shadowhunter universe the way that it is. The only issue I could find is that the dialogue can be a bit forced on occasion, as I've seemed to notice from Clare's writing, but for the most part, I have to admire Clare's ability to switch between her beautifully written actions and details to the usually realistic dialogue.
The Bane Chronicles is one of my all-time favorite books, and I would recommend it -- and the entire Shadowhunter saga -- to absolutely everyone.
