Darkest Minds

By Hailey L.
The book the Darkest Minds is a future holocaust with kids who have powers as victims. After a bad illness, IANN, infected many kids killing most, and leaving others with powers, the government was in shambles. There was one solution to this, they placed any kid they found out had powers into concentration camps. Ruby was one of these kids, and the story tells her experience. Written by Alexandra Bracken, it does not stand alone. This book is one of a trilogy. The other two books is Never Fade and The After Light.

The story starts out with her time at Thurman, the friends she made in the beginning. Eventually being one of the dangerous ones she escaped Thurman with the help of a nurse. From then on it describes the world around her. How the world has been stricken by a depression and how her and her friends fight for their goals and to stay alive and out of the camps.
The book is not so much relatable, but more of you could picture yourself in her position, unlike most first person book. It is very clear and thorough with character development. Every character is well developed, history and all. The only character I would change is Ruby, so it is not her fear that makes her helpless. The writing style is great, and doesn't spoil a thing. It keeps you intrigued, and into every page. The pacing was too fast at certain parts sometimes. At times I wish it would slow down and savor the moments, and other times I think it is well done.
The story, The Darkest Minds, is a great story. I would recommend this sci-fi adventure story to the general audience. It is an important reminder of what we could become, and a story with characters and a plot you could fall in love with.
