"Wrede" this book

By Julia L.

As a previous reader of Patricia C. Wrede's work, I was pleased when she released her On Writing book. In reality, it is less of a book and more of a collection of essays, but it is still focused on the various aspects of creative writing. The book is split into three sections, the first on what Wrede considers the "basics," the second what I dub to be more intermediate things, and the third focusing more on the details and specifics of creative writing (think flashbacks, how to do proper infodumps, etc.).

The nature of the book is such that is covers a wide variety of topics, though not in much depth. I found that it was still helpful, however, and was able to get me thinking. Her opinions (feel free to disagree with them, of course) are entertaining and different from what many writers say in books about writing. She will discuss topics that beginning writers are often told to always stay away from, and she will always talk about things from multiple sides. After all, every writer is different, so every writer's process will be different.
Wrede provides a breadth of advice, so if you are unable to pinpoint exactly what you need help with writing-wise, this would be an excellent read. The essays are also on her blog, so if you are unable or unwilling to purchase the book, you can find it there. She is the author of Thirteenth Child, The Seven Towers, and other books. I would recommend them to anyone who is in the mood for good fantasy.
